I have included this index and made it easily accessible because it is superb work [though not wholly complete, anymore than any similar index could be], it clearly shows the long history of biblical criticism among serious theologians and scholars. While it has been known by many educated ecclesiastical leaders for a very long time that the Bible was not "verbally inspired" parse, as is evidenced by the retranslations and critical sources listed here -- it was not until the mid-1800s that discussion of this reality made its way from the halls of the seminary to the pulpit -- beginning with a group of mostly German theologians, whose work began to be mentioned, and whose conclusions began to be quoted, to the congregations. Later books listed in this index are still available for study of course, and lots of excellent (and more commonly readable books) on the same subjects can be easily found. |
